Being a pretty good programmer, I've designed a lot of utilities to add to your enjoyment of the Elite series of games. Some of them are basic text files with information, others are custom patches for addition to the game directory. All of my files are very detailed, and often took months to complete. Most of the Elite sites on the web use some or all of these files on their download pages. Here you can download the complete and working originals. Nor will you find any Viruses or SpyWare as they are all clean and ready to use. So you will not find a better source for Elite, Frontier Elite II, and Frontier First Encounters utilities on the web. Many of the games are available on the Versions page. Thanks to the generosity of David Braben and Ian Bell , many versions of the games are available on their respective websites. The games are also available via visiting other sites on the Links page.
There are several ways to run the games. However, this can be difficult as they are DOS games circa 1984-1995 which can require considerable file editing and setup to run on newer PCs. The best way is to setup an older PC such as a 166mhz non-mmx system running DOS 6.22 and Windows 3.1 OS. All the original games will then run perfectly on this system.
Setting up an older computer just to run games is not all that unusual. Old PC systems can be found for very little or no cost, and the Elite games are well worth the effort. There are also many other great DOS games that still hold up today, and can also run on this system.
Another way to run the games on newer PCs is to patch an existing game installation with an updated executable, or run an emulator program and then run an image file of the game. These methods will also require a little programming effort. See the Programmer's Links section of this Utilities page for more information.
Finally a WARNING...These games are some of the best you will ever find on this planet! Forget they don't have the latest greatest graphics and audio. If you get hooked on them, you will join an Elite group of players who will always be forever dissapointed by the games you see in the stores today! So you have been dually warned!
ALL OF THESE FILES ARE USED AT YOUR OWN RISK ! ! !
Neither I, the server provider, the game authors, your dog, or anyone else you can think of, is responsible in any way for the loss or damage to your programs due to the use or misuse of these utilities. With that said, follow the instructions in the files, backup your original files before using the new ones, and you should do just fine.

| The Elite games are DOS programs. They do not like Windows 95 or better, and do not support most newer hardware directly. In an effort to resolve some of these issues, several programmers have created updated patches and game versions. The following Links will get the games up and running on your newer PC. These files have been extensively tested by the Elite community, and they appear to work reliably. Be sure to carefully read their setup instructions and FAQs before proceeding with an installation. | ||
